In the wake of Demonetization notification, suddenly bankers
have attracted attention of the nation for the positive reasons. There is rush
of pleas and requests on the social media to cooperate with the overburdened
poor bankers, who are suffering with the workload of exchanging loads of old
notes, issuing new currency, and collecting or depositing old notes of
denominations of Rs. 500/- and Rs. 1000/-.
Something like sympathy drive for the bankers, who were
earlier known for their cushy and sophisticated jobs in the eyes of Indian
Masses.
Is all this true? Before discussing what is coming into
media, I would like to share personal and real experience with the banking
system.
Despite of concurring with Demonetization step, I was pained
with the suffering of the general public, who had to wait for hours together
before banks and ATMs just to withdraw their own money, however, nothing I
could do, except arranging tea, water etc., as a welfare measure from my Public
Charitable Trust AHWAAN. When Government declared that all the petrol pumps of
India will distribute new currency, just like ATMs, through their Swipe
Machines, popularly called credit card machines; being a professional with Finance,
Law and Accounting background, I delved deep into the provisions, under which
this facility was extended, by petrol pumps, and latter also by Big Bazaar
establishments.
I have a SBI swipe machine at the office of AstroDevam.com,
to whom I am honorary mentor. I was startled to know that not only petrol pumps
and Big Bazaar establishments, but any establishment who has a swipe machine,
at least from SBI can disburse currency, just like ATMs of banks, obviously
with some ceiling e.g. Rs. One Lakh per day. It was certainly good news. Now, I
could do something for reducing the pain and suffering of common man standing
before banks and ATM machines.
I immediately approached our SBI branch. At first, they
shown ignorance about any such scheme. Second day, they accepted that there is
such scheme, but they informed that they don’t have any details about that.
Third day, I was informed that instructions from Headquarters are awaited. In this way, ten days have already passed,
and action is still awaited, despite of putting up signatures by us on the
dotted lines, wherever asked by the bank people.
In the meantime, all
tactics have been used by the SBI management to dissuade me from this
initiative. Simultaneously, the queue before banks and ATMs are unable to recede.
I am unable to understand how to tackle these bankers, who don’t have any
concern about the plight of general public.
If this is the condition of State Bank of India, what to
talk about other banks?
It is the general experience of public that in this hour of
crisis:
Bankers are taking more time on clearing transactions, as compared
to normal times.
They are focusing more on the formalities, as compared to
normal times.
New currency evaporated from the banks in suspicious ways.
When exchange of old notes was in vogue, many persons informed
with confidence to have seen bank staff processing exchange forms in bulk,
apparently to help some vested interests.
My question is that all this is being done for the petty
gains, or to defame the demonetization step of the Modi Government?
